The MECHANIC F-FIX is a specialized repair fixture for fixing Face ID issues on iPhones by reballing the dot projector module. It is used by repair technicians for intricate, micro-soldering tasks on the Face ID system and is not intended for the average user.

What the

Mechanic F-Fix fixture

does

  • Reballs the dot projector: The tool provides a secure platform for reballing the tiny solder balls on the dot projector module, a key component of the iPhone's TrueDepth camera system.

  • Prevents damage: Its grooved design ensures the delicate dot projector is held firmly without damaging the sensitive flex cable during the repair process.

  • Simplifies soldering: The fixture includes a steel stencil that helps technicians accurately apply new solder to the dot projector for a reliable connection.

  • Supports multiple models: It is compatible with a wide range of iPhone models, specifically the iPhone X through 13 series.

Face ID repair considerations

DIY repair of Face ID is an extremely complex and sensitive process. The TrueDepth camera system is factory-calibrated and paired with the phone's logic board for security. Even a slight misalignment can permanently disable Face ID.

Because of these security features, Apple strongly discourages unauthorized repairs. If you do not have the specialized skills and tools, your options for fixing Face ID are:

  • Official repair: The safest and most reliable method is to bring your device to an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP). Only Apple and its authorized partners have the proprietary calibration tools to properly service the Face ID system.

  • Self-service repair: Apple offers a "Self Service Repair" program for certain devices, but it still requires purchasing genuine Apple parts and using specific calibration tools.

  • Third-party repair: Independent shops may offer this repair, but success depends on the technician's expertise and equipment. An improper repair can cause permanent damage, and an iOS update could disable Face ID if an unauthorized part was used.

If Face ID stops working, try these steps first

Before attempting or authorizing a hardware repair, Apple recommends trying these steps:

  1. Check for obstructions: Ensure the TrueDepth camera area on your iPhone's front is clean and not blocked by a case or screen protector.

  2. Make sure your face is visible: Ensure nothing is covering your eyes, nose, and mouth.

  3. Update iOS: Confirm your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS.

  4. Restart your device: A simple reboot can resolve minor software issues.

  5. Reset Face ID: Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and tap "Reset Face ID," then try setting it up again.
